John J. “Jack” Klein of California., formerly of Westwood, a World War II veteran and a retired engineering teacher, died Sunday. He was 83.
Born and raised in Cambridge, Mr. Klein lived in Westwood for 36 years before settling in Anaheim, Calif.
Mr. Klein graduated from the former Cambridge Latin in 1942. He received his bachelor’s of science in electrical engineering from Northeastern University in 1949 and a master’s in electrical engineering in 1955.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Navy from 1943 to 1946, achieving the rank of electronic technician’s mate second class. He began his service on a repair ship in the South Pacific before he was transferred to the USS Vixen in the Atlantic.
Mr. Klein taught electrical engineering at Northeastern University’s night school for 35 years until he retired in 1993. In 1956, he joined RCA’s defense department as senior engineer scientist. Before retiring from RCA in 1989, Mr. Klein was part of the team responsible for the color television that went to the moon, and he helped develop retrorocket technology that allowed the LEM to lift off from the moon’s surface.
He was a member of the Westwood Lion’s Club, the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus in Anaheim, Veterans of Foreign Wars and attended St. Margaret Mary Church in Westwood.
Former husband of the late Ruth (O’Hara), Mr. Klein is survived by his wife, Betty (Woolf) of California.; a daughter, Audrey Williams of South Boston; a son, John J. Jr. of Utah; a stepson, Joseph Woolf of California; a brother, Edward of California; a sister, Carol Callahan of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. Margaret Mary Church, Westwood.
