Default Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw passed away

Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw, victor of the Indo-Paquistanese War of 1971, passed away last June 27, at 94 years old.

He fought WWII as a Captain in Burma, where he was wounded in the stomach by a burst of machine-gun fire from the Japanese, and nearly died. After the war, he ascended in the ranks of Indian Army and became Army Chief of Staff in 1969. He coordenated the successful Indian advance into eastern Paquistan, obtaining victory in a short two-week campaign, which resulted in the creation of the state of Bangladesh. He was made Field Marshall in January, 1973.

R.I.P. Field Marshall!

After capturing the hill, he was hit by a burst of LMG bullets and was severely wounded in the stomach. Major General D.T. Cowan spotted Manekshaw holding on to life and was aware of his valour in face of stiff resistance from the Japanese. Fearing the worst, Major General Cowan quickly pinned his own Military Cross (MC) ribbon to Manekshaw saying, "A dead person cannot be awarded a Military Cross."

Sam Manekshaw - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manekshaw was almost pronounced dead when brought to Rangoon hospital with nine bullets in the lung, liver and kidneys. The military surgeon was reluctant to operate seeing the hopeless condition even though Manekshaw was barely conscious. The surgeon asked what had happened to him. Sam replied: "I was kicked by a donkey." The surgeon decided that if a soldier could have such a sense of humour at that critical hour, he must operate to save him.
