Unhappy Mr. Richard L. Hahn: World War II served with the Army's 5th Regiment in the Military Police Battalion.

The Frederick News-Post Online - Frederick County Maryland Daily Newspaper

Mr. Richard L. Hahn

As originally published on Sunday, February 1, 2009.

Richard L. Hahn, 85, who worked for 44 years with C&P Telephone Co. and later Bell Atlantic in Washington, before retiring in 1988 as foreman supervisor, died at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, from heart disease.

Mr. Hahn began his career with C&P Telephone in 1944 during World War II, after serving time with the Army's 5th Regiment in the Military Police Battalion.

Mr. Hahn and his wife were members of the Bethesda United Methodist Church where they led the Methodist Youth Fellowship for many years before moving to the Rockville United Methodist Church and continued their mission with the high school youth at the church. He was active on the administrative board at Rockville United Methodist Church as well as many other committees and roles for the past 50 years.

"Dick," as he was known to friends, served in many capacities after retirement. He installed Lifeline units for seniors in need through Suburban Hospital in the early 1990s. He delivered food for MANNA, a resource for food to the needy in Montgomery County. He routinely volunteered at the Rockville Senior Center.

He was an assistant Scout master for Troop 447 at Rockville United Methodist Church during the 1970s. He was president of the Local Chapter of the Telephone Pioneers and achieved the Lifetime Member Award for Outstanding Service. He volunteered at the Holiday Park Senior Center preparing tax returns for seniors. His last volunteer role with Montgomery County Police in the Fraud and Computer Crimes Unit was his favorite.
Born in Frederick, Mr. Hahn grew up in Thurmont and graduated from Thurmont High School, Class of 1942, where he served on the all-county basketball and baseball teams. He was a member of the Boy Scouts as a child in Thurmont.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Marilyn Mae Smith Hahn; two children, Lisa Lee Joyce and her husband, Patrick, of Poolesville, and Michael Howard Hahn of Germantown; and four grandchildren, Jennifer Lee
Joyce, Christopher Patrick Joyce, Michael Richard Hahn and Alec Smith Hahn.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at Rockville United Methodist Church, 112 W. Montgomery Ave., Rockville, MD 20850.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rockville United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, at the above address.
