FAYETTE,OH. — George R. Emmons, age 87, of Fayette, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home in Archbold. Prior to his retirement in 1983 he had been the manager of the Ohio Gas Company in Archbold.

George was born in Bristol, New Hampshire on December 15, 1921, the son of the late Ralph R. and the late Myra (Robinson) Emmons. His father died when George was 1 1/2 years old and his mother, Myra, then raised five children alone.

George attended Bristol Elementary and Bristol High School, graduating in 1939. He then bought a Paper and Variety Store and ran the store until he joined the Army Air Force during WWII. He was sent to England and was an airplane mechanic with the 390th Bomb Group. He returned to Bristol, N.H. after the war and met his future wife, Catherine Strasbaugh, after a skiing accident. They married on Oct. 1, 1946. George was a member of the Bristol Masonic Union Lodge #79.

After selling his business in 1951 and moving his family to Ohio, he worked as a night watchman for the Ohio Gas Company. He worked his way up into the manager’s position for the Archbold area and retired in 1983. George was an avid golfer and both he and his wife traveled extensively throughout the United States and many foreign countries.

Surviving, besides his wife, Catherine, of 62 years, are children Michael (Sue) Emmons of Mt. Sterling, Ohio, Laura (Les) Schaffner of Fayette, Ohio, George Jr. (Sandy) Emmons of Archbold, Ohio, Martha (Ed) Bellinger of Stryker, Ohio, Myra Emmons of New Boston, N.H.; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Rebecca, brothers Ralph, Fred, Robert, and sister Kathleen Wright.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at the Grisier Funeral Home in Archbold, with the Rev. Donna Stutzman officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home in Tuesday from 2 p.m. until the time of service. The family requests that memorial contributions be given to the charity of the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.grisierfh.com

Welcome to the forum.

Posts are individual entries made in the forum, as in posting a note on a bulletin board. MuseumWorker made a post when he (or possibly she) added the obituary about your father. Your question was a also a post.

Salutes are made by members who enjoyed a particular post, for whatever reason.

We have members, such as MuseumWorker, who post obituaries of WWII veterans, as a small tribute to their service and as another way to honor and remember them.

Could you tell us more of your father?
