"ENDWELL -- Funeral services will be held Monday for an Endwell man who turned his memories of the attack on Pearl Harbor and wartime service in the Pacific into a book, "Living Cold Steel with a Dauntless Heart and Soul."
Nikolai A. Severski, 88, was a radio operator on the destroyer USS Maury, at sea more than any other U.S. Navy ship during World War II. During that time, he kept a detailed diary, not only of his experiences at Pearl Harbor, but other battles that the Maury was involved in, including Midway, Guadalcanal and the liberation of Philippines.
After his wife, June, died in 1992, Severski turned the diaries and original onion skin Navy radio messages into the self-published book.
"I would say he was a man of honor and true graciousness," said his son, John Severski of Seattle, a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force.
Serverski died Wednesday from complications after surgery."
