JOHN "JOHNNY" HENRY HINES JR., 89, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at his home. Born on Nov. 12, 1919, in Fort Wayne, he was the first child of John Henry Hines Sr. and Lydia Myrtle (Gemlich) Hines. He attended South Side High School, Fort Wayne, where he served as president of his class. An avid sportsman, he lettered in football, basketball and golf. He captained the basketball team his senior year when South Side won the 1938 Indiana State High School Basketball Championship. He was later inducted into the Indiana High School Basketball Hall of Fame. His talents won him an athletic scholarship to the University of Alabama where he played basketball for four years, earned a business degree and participated in R.O.T.C. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Supply Corp. He achieved the rank of captain and served in Georgia and the Philippines. After the war, he returned to Fort Wayne and had an extensive career as a self-employed real estate broker and appraiser. he was a member of First Presbyterian Church and attended many South Side sports events. He enjoyed golf and the fellowship of his neighbors and friends from the area surrounding his beloved Foster Park. Surviving are his daughters, Janet Carol (John) Stiles of Kaneohe, Hawaii and Cynthia Jean (Timothy) Goodman of Fort Wayne; sons, James Paul (Deanna) Hines of Winston-Salem, N.C. and John David Hines of Fort Wayne; sister, Mary Lee (Hines) Katovich of Kenosha, Wis.; six grandchildren, Cari (Cy) Hodgson of Chicago, Ill., Julie Stiles of Kaneohe, Andrew Goodman and Matthew Goodman, both of Fort Wayne and Robby Hines and Michael Hines, both of Winston-Salem; and one great-grandchild, Connor Hodgson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Carolyn (Carson) of Atlanta, Ga., in 2003; and brothers, Robert Lewis Hines and Harry Eugene Hines. Funeral service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Klaehn, Fahl & Melton Funeral Home, Winchester Road Chapel, 6424 Winchester Road, with visitation from noon until time of service. Preferred memorials to South Side High School Athletic Department.
