Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
In the period between 22nd June 1941 and 31st December 1944, the
" Totenkopf " division lost an astronomical number of men, a total of 53,794. No other division within Army Group South sustained such a disastrously high level of losses. " Wiking ", which was a professional and experienced division, suffered 11,098 losses.

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
During 1943 a schwarm of 1./JG 54 became the most successful formation of its type in the Luftwaffe; Hpt. Walter Nowotny (257 kills), Uzz Karl Schnörrer (46), Lt Anton Döbele (94) and Lt Rudolf Rademacher(126) amassed 500 air victories between them in 1943-1944.

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
The Soviet 131. Infantry division was being transferred to Petsamo since 21st December 1939 escorted by an ice breaker G Sedov. However the ice situation changed some 80 kilometers from Archangel, and the ships were stuck and G sedov alone could not help the situation. In order to get help messages were sent but no icebreakers were available until two weeks later. The 131st infantry dvision spent two weeks in the ships wearing summer clothing and had very little to eat. Once the division finally reached the front 30% of the troops were too weak to participate in the war because of the cold and hunger.

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
This is bizarre, I thought only German troops got cold in the winter.

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
Winter War was excellent training for the Red Army and they used all the knowledge they got against Germans some two years later...

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
And what a nasty surprise this weapon was to the Germans and the rest of the world.
I believe that when the Germans first encountered this weapon, there was an immediate order given out by the German high command to capture one in tact.

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
Epidemic jaundice and German army
The epidemic jaundice experiments, which took place at Sachsenhausen and Natzweiler concentration camps, were instigated by the defendant Karl Brandt. A letter written in 1943 by Grawitz stresses the enormous military importance of developing an inoculation against epidemic jaundice, which had spread extensively in the Waffen SS and the German Army, particularly in southern Russia. In some companies, up to 60 percent casualties from epidemic jaundice had occurred....

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
I could not much either. Pretty much all Russian mines (anti personnel and anti tank) were made of wood.
I did find a reference to a 'ezmine' used for anti tank purposes. I also found a reference to an small horned anti-tank magnetic mine with designation 'HM/S' used by the Finnish army. Perhaps Kai can elaborate on this.

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
I´ll try to see what I can do. I have the advantage that some info is probably in Finnish available ( if there is much?) so I can translate that. I´ll see tonight if there´s something I can do about it.

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
About tank mines, something at the end of the following site:
SOVIET TM 35 and TM 38 antitank-mines (Tankovaja Mina 35 / Tankovaja Mina 38): Finnish Army cleared huge number of these antitank-mines from Soviet minefields during Continuation War. Reportedly large number of the mines captured in this way were reused in Finnish minefields.

TM-38 mine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For the magnetic mines must admit haven´t found anything as I was wondering last year what the Zimmerit was made for...perhaps there was no Red Army´s own magnetic AT mine (?).

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
During the war the Soviet Union manufactured 18.3 million rifles and SMG`s , of which 6.1 million ( 34%) were sub-machine guns. In contrast, the Germans manufactured 11.6 million rifles and SMG´s, of which only 1.2 million ( 11%) were sub-machine guns.

the zimmerit was used cause the germans thought their enemies would use magnetic bombs/mines, which the british did, but the zimmerit didnt protect against sticky bombs which the brits and americans used........the germans used magnetic AT mines/bombs.......

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
Molotov Line
Molotov Line - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The so-called Molotov Line was a system of fortifications built by the Soviet Union in the years 1940-1941, along its new western border after it annexed the Baltic States, Eastern Poland and Bessarabia. This territorial expansion was the direct result of the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, signed on the Soviet side by Vyacheslav Molotov, hence the name Molotov Line.
The "road" to the gallery is also on the wikipedia page. Loads of pics.
