Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
Agreed on the tents. But now we know what it was supposed to look like, and I think this would definitely be before Barbarossa (?). Haven´t seen any pics on that "area" before.

Odessa - Red Army´s Dunkirk
WorldWar2.ro - The Battle of Odessa - 1941
The Soviet side managed to evacuate about 350,000 soldiers and civilians from the city. Odessa received the honorary title of "hero city".

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
It has been estimated that by the second half of October 1942 more than 75% of Stalingrad´s defenders the equivalent of nine divisions were destroyed, yet still the survivors continued to resist.

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
Soviet Air Force Leningrad sector 1941:
The summer and fall of 1941 were hard times for the Soviet Air Force. Led by Major Hannes Trautloft, the German JG54 "Grünherz" - the main Luftwaffe fighter unit on the Leningrad front during the entire war - claimed no less than 1,123 Russian aircraft's shot down from June to November of that year. But one Soviet fighter unit in this area, 39 IAD (Fighter Wing) distinguished itself by its repeated successes against superior German aircraft. During the month of August 1941, 39 IAD was credited with half of the 213 German aircraft claimed shot down by the Russians in this combat zone.

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
Speaking of Stalingrad pictures. I have several from a Luftwaffe Veteran who was stationed at Ptomnik Airfield. If I had a way to post these frigging things, I would. Also, I have two nice Heinroch Hoffmann Press Foto's taken at Stalingrad. One shows a Luftwaffe light AA gun and the other is some sort of command center in a bunker.
I forgot to mention that Otto has around 40 or so photo's of men in the 44th Inf Div - which was destroyed at Stalingrad. If I recall, most of the photo's were taken before the battle began.

If you wondered what it looked like deep in the Karelian forests during wartime 1942...here´s a pic and the name of the place is " Hideaway" ( what it says in the right lower corner ).

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
The first pic is taken after some heavy fighting during autumn 1941 and the Red Army is forced to abandon their position. The second is a captured tank now in the Finnish army. Both pics from the Finnish front autumn 1941.

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
It would be a good place to defend in but not to attack in. If you knew how to get around in the forest without getting lost then you could circle around your attackers with no problems.
I was surprised how small the tank was. In pictures of it by itself with no people around it looks much larger.
