Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
Red Army Air Force and early Barbarossa phase and Finland:
Early on the morning of 25 June 1941 some 150 Soviet bombers took off and attacked several locations in southern Finland. LeLv 24 Brewsters took off from their home fields for the first large aerial engagements of the Continuation War. In the intense fighting LeLv 24 Brewster pilots shot down ten SB bombers without any own losses. After this the Soviets kept a break of some days in bomber operations commencing them again during the last days of June, when LeLv 24 scored 12 more aircraft. The Brewster turned out to be a very good fighter in combat; it was fast enough and gun accuracy was good along with the firepower of the .50 cal machine guns. But the enemy knew now the rules of the game - they made fast dashes with the bombers to coastal Finland and returned before the Brewsters got to the area from Vesivehmaa.

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
Hello Kai Petri,
great photos and I hope to see more.
BTW, sorry I do not mean to interrupt your thread; I remember a color photo from "Signal" showing 3-4 young Finnish soldiers bearing a Skull and bones in front of their German helmet - unfortunatly I can't find the photo.
Question; where these soldiers from a Finnish unit or members of a Finnish SS unit? IIRC they did not display SS collar insignias but wore Wehrmacht Fieldblouses.
The other Question: is this SS Obergruppenfuehrer known to you and did he serve in Finnland - the cross looks like a Finnish cross?

Actually , personally I only recall such helmets from WWI photos but these could be early WW2 as well, I guess. The Finns served in Waffen-SS as a separate unit, but were recalled in summer 1943, but some served as inviduals in the German Army later on. Difficult question but personally I would think they were not Finns, but not 100% sure.

The second one is an easy one for us Finns....

Hello Kai-Petri,
thanks for your effort and links. Looking forward to read on the Finns of the Wiking. Can't open the Demelhuber link but after getting his name from you I can do some research on the internet.
I will still and try to get my hands an this Helmets with skull and bones photo.

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
Hello Kruska,
Did some digging in Finnish for one hour but only learnt that they probably were part of 4th light unit ( which belonged to one of the Finnish infantry divisions but did not find out exactky which). It seems they were a special unit who used this at least temporarily on their helmets, maybe to show the other units they were special, and I suspect this was during 1941-42 period. But like I said this is something I did not find definite data on.

Re: Russian WW2 interesting stats and facts
Hello Kai-Petri,
Well at least they had horses. I remember a German WW2 vet, swearing at us upon our question in regards to the horses dragging his Pak 75, and he answered; Horses? We were the dam horses, for f******* 2 years we had to drag that bastard through Russia.
Regards
