Cool

Does anyone know where I can find some cool photos of the Grain Elevator at Stalingrad online? I am really interested in this fight. I saw one picture in Stephen Walsh's "The Infernal Cauldron" but I have not seen any others.

Don't recall seing any at all, really. Which is odd considering the intensity of the fighting!

Quick search revealed a few present-day shots only:

Buy a copy of Jason Marks excellent book Death of the Leaping Horseman, 24 Panzer Division in Stalingrad,it has some superb original photos of the Grain Silos and the fighting around them.

I was in Stalingrad in 2002 with Phil Curme and as you can see the Silos are still a great Landmark in the south of the city today,

I'm quite certain that I've seen a film-clip showing shells bursting against the Stalingrad grain silos - maybe in the 'World At War' video series ?

Later : -

Just found two quite good photos of ' die Getreidesilos in Stalingrad-Sud'. They show an MG34 team and 10.5cm Fh18/40 gun in action with the silos in the immediate background, and are on pp. 129 & 133 of Janusz Piekalkiewicz' book, 'Stalingrad : Anatomie einer Schlacht' ( Sudwest Verlag 1977 ).

Although it's a German-language publication it's well worth getting hold of as it seems to contain just about every b/w photo taken during the battle.

I was just cruising through Vladimirs Stalingrad site this afternoon and he had some aerial photos which included the Grain Silo. Somewhere on the site or in it's links, was a site that had photos from a few vets displayed one set in particular--showed a few pice of either the silo or the building near it--I can't remember which.

Also, depending on what site you visit, what map you see or what map in whichever book you look at, these German Divisions were fighting in or VERY near that area.

14th Panzer Div.
376th ID.
297th ID.
371st ID.
Rumanian 20th ID.

Sadly, so many publications and sites seemed to be a bit "confused" as to the placement of the German Divisions that made up 6th Armee.
