I'm just now reading Christer Bergstrom's new book,
'Barbarossa : The Air Battle'. Sometimes when I'm reading such a book, an incident really sticks in my mind as extraordinary.....
On July 1st, 1941 a formation of Luftwaffe bombers ( most likely HeIIIs of KG53 ) attacked an airfield at Minsk where a flight of Polikarpov I-16s had just landed. Out of ammo, Lt Nikolay Terekhin immediately took off and gave chase. He rammed the tail of the nearest Heinkel, which rolled onto its port wing and collided with the flight leader - which veered left and hit the left-hand bomber in the formation. All four aircraft went out of control and several parachutes blossomed.
On the way down, Terekhin and a number of the Germans reportedly drew their small personal pistols and started firing at each other.....
Well, I thought it was a nice story.....
