For those who want no nonsense action with realistic wounding and weapons action, you can't go further than Day of Defeat.

What? A multiplayer game I hear you say? Yes it is multiplayer, and the only objective is flag capture or defence of known goals but through the use of bots (Sturmbot v1.6) you have an intelligent enemy that thinks and LEARNS from its mistakes, actually able to stalk, chase and out-manuver you. In some cases, its impossible to tell a bot apart from a human.

The best part of all this of course, is you can make the game entirely random, it would be possible to play the game 100 times and have 100 different outcomes, unlike those linear MOHAA and COD games where the enemy is nearly always in the same place at the same time.

I'll give you an example, I love playing the Germans, because my two fave weapons are the k98 (deadly at long distances) and the MG34.

I was hunkered down in a great fire position down a street and some british riflemen were coming up it. After mowing down about 10 of them, they respawned and tried a new tactic on me. They hid behind a house and 2 simultaneously ran out one to the far right and the other one dropped out about 3 steps from the wall...while my gun was travesing to the right to catch the first bug*er the second had already eyeballed me and bang, one shot one kill.

Thats the other thing...realistic wounding. Most of the time a headshot will kill you. If you are lucky it will take your helmet off and you run around without one. If you are wounded, your "bleed" and have only a limited time to press "Z", the heal wound key. During this time you drop your weapon and you are defenceless for about 5 seconds, after which you are ready to fight again!

I have been playing this now for about 2 years, it has gone through only 2 major version changes, getting better and better all the time.

My far and away favourite thing is being able to macro-key commands to the bots. Bascially you shout orders to them like "cover fire" or "go go go" or hold this position and they do just that. They even say "negative" if they cannot physically do something. Ie If I gave the order to "throw a grenade" and some don't have sight of the enemy or have no grenades left they will say "negative" while the other say "yes sir" and a volley of grenades will sail through the air. This game is mind bending stuff. Graphics will blow you away and the skins of individual soldiers are different for each soldier class. Every imagineable weapon is there including the famous FG42 for the fallshirminger.

Best of all the game is FREE to download.

All you need is the OLD very OLD half life game.
