‘US liner President Hoover burns at sea’, I. K. Keijin reporting
The US liner President Hoover swept by an out-of-control fire was
abandoned three days ago approxmately 300 nm south east of the Bonin Islands after attempts by the crew to put out the fire failed.
The motor trawler Kongo Maru No. 2 witnessed first hand the tragic
situation. Captain Yashamita of the Kongo Maru No. 2 stated today after arriving in port at Sasebo that there was little anyone on the scene could do. His small vessel was carrying 263 survivors. The Belgian motor vessel Josephine Charlotte that later arrived on the scene also arrived late today in Sasebo carrying the remaining survivors. The Captain of the President Hoover, J. Cameron stated that a check of the manifest shows that 9 crewmen and 12 passengers are missing and presumed dead, 6 crewmen are know to have died fighting the fire and, an unknown number of crew and passengers are injured. 52 persons were admitted to local hospitals from this accident.
An investigation into the cause of the fire which apparently started in one of the ship's engine rooms will be made once the vessel can be towed to port. His Imperial Majesty's Navy has sent a vessel to tow the President Hoover to port. The Japanese people express their sorrow at the loss of these lives in this tragic accident. A previous report that this liner had in fact sunk were premature.

Washington Post – USA
‘PRESIDENT DAVEY CALLS FOR ARMY OF VOLUNTEERS’
In a surprise move, the President asked Congress to raise an Army of 250,000 Volunteers grouped into Nine 28,000 Man Divisions, to be made combat ready in preparations for the War in Europe which appears imminent. The President also added that the rest of the United States army should remain on a peacetime stance, as this nation has no intention of jumping into war in Europe. He added that this army is to be raised, as a deterrent should the Powers of Europe turn hostile towards America.
The American President also asked Congress to consider the recent requests from the President of France as to whether or not America is willing to sell arms to the French Army.
Congress will debate this issue this week.
The Following is the speech that President Davey delivered in front of the House and Senate in Late August 1939…
”My Fellow Americans,
It has now been more than twenty years since American troops have seen combat on the continent of Europe. We entered that war of twenty years ago because we felt it was our duty to defend the ideal of the Republic; we also entered that war of twenty years ago because we thought then that it would become ‘the war to end all wars.’ Sadly, it must be said, that prophecy of two decades ago has not borne fruit, and once again the nations of freedom and democracy are once again under the threat of the forces of tyranny. I feel that just as it was so in 1917, it is again our responsibility here in the year 1939 to once again stand up for the values and ideals that we Americans introduced to the modern world.
However the last ‘Great War’ was indeed a costly one, in six months of major combat operations, the United States army suffered over 100,000 causalities of combat against the enemy. Our allies, the British, and the French, both lost 8 and 11 percent of their entire nation’s population, meanwhile, our casualties amounted to no more than one-third of one percent. It can only be suspected that this war which is nearly upon us shall only bring more bloodshed to those involved, it is for these reasons that America does not wish to enter another foreign war, and that we intend to avoid any further bloodshed.
We cannot however be blinded by our wanting to avoid war on foreign soil, we cannot be caught unprepared as we were in the last Great War, that is why I have asked the congress to authorize the formation of the American First Army. This force shall be made up of 250,000 volunteer American soldiers, and the full amount of support personnel required to maintain such a force. This army shall be separate from the rest of the current peacetime army, as this force is to be made ready. I ask that this force be up to full operational strength by the end of this year. This force, all told, shall number 9 fully equipped divisions, each numbering 28,000 soldiers. Furthermore this force shall be adequately supported in the air, as I am also asking the congress to authorize the formation of a new combat wing for the United States Army Air Corps. This force is to number, in total, 800 B-17 Flying Fortresses, fully manned, along with 12,000 additional Fighter Aircraft. Now, currently our industry has been concentrated more on luxury goods than on the tools necessary to fight this coming battle. We are building refrigerators while the nations of Europe build bombs! We must step up our arms production, again, not as preparation for going to war, but as preparation to defend our nation should the time come. As Thomas Jefferson once said, “We confide in our strength, without boasting of it; we respect that of others, without fearing it.” It is by these words that America once prepares, we must take confidence in our strength, but first, we must have that strength! And with it, once again, the American people shall once again keep the world safe for democracy.
For those that intend to go to war with the democratic states of the world, consider this a warning; America shall not sit by idly whilst the Freedom-Loving peoples of the world are subjugated under the jackboot of tyranny.
Thank you all, and God Bless America.”

Beormunster Radio Special Report by Peter Baver…
For some days now I have been touring the Polish-German border. I have seen the increase in the numbers of troops on both sides yet neither seem ready to commit to action. My talks with Polish soldiers reveal a group of men ready to defend their motherland and full of courage. My trips into Germany, have shown soldiers prepared for anything, smarting from the recent reports of Polish aggression. Both sides seem set for a showdown, yet neither seems willing to start a war. Perhaps peace can still be rescued from the pit of conflict.
Yesterday, I was shown the wreck of a Polish aircraft that had strayed into German territory. I was unable to ascertain the fate of the crew and my guides seemed reluctant to discuss the matter further.
My travels along the border have filled me with a sense of foreboding. It seems that Europe really does stand on the brink of war and could fall into the chasm at any time. The more troops that build up in these border regions, the less chance we have of finding a peaceful solution.
Peter Baver signing off…

NEWS FLASH NEWS FLASH NEWS FLASH NEWS FLASH
Beormunster Special Correspondent Peter Baver.
"Yesterday I witnessed a truly remarkable scene. I was taken to Marienehe airfield by an old friend, P.J.P. Von Ohain, to see the flight of a new generation of aircraft along with members of the German and Japanese military, even the Fuhrer Stefan Hitler was said to be attending. The Heinkel 178 is powered by a 'jet' engine. With Luftwaffe Captain Erich Warsitz at the controls the plane reached speeds of 400 mph until the test flight was broke to a dramatic conclusion by a bird being sucked into the engine! Both pilot and aircraft returned to the ground safely as can be seen from the accompanying photo. A truly remarkable day, one that may change the face on aircraft design in the future.

'Unknown group burn plantations in Indochina'
'An unknown group of attackers burnt down the buildings of two plantations this week. The workers and owners were burnt alive or shot before they could escape. The attackers dissapeared back into the jungle. The French Ministry of Defence is worried that this may be in response to recent calls for colonial conscription'.

El Diario del Sol, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
"WAVE OF VOLUNTEERS OVERWHELM FRENCH AMBASSY"
Authorities report that since a week ago, when the French Goverment of President d'Épéhéry launched the worldwide recruiting campaign "For liberty, for France, for you!", more than 1800 volunteers from Buenos Aires alone have answered the call. French consulates around the whole country are said to have a constant number of incoming volunteers. "We'll go and teach Hitler a lesson!" said Roberto Ponchielli, a 21-year-old student from Buenos Aires who enlisted this morning along some friends.
Similar circumstances are said to be taking place in the rest of Latin American capitals and the United States.
