Well, i'm getting a new Alienware Area 51 3550 Computer on Monday (thats when it is due to arrive) which is very exciting (for me at least) and and bought two new games. KOTOR II and SH 3. Never played a subsim game before, or any other sort of sim other then Secret Weapons over Normandy on PS2, and it looks pretty good. Now i'll be able to play Oblivion on its best settings!

Mussolini, you should find SH3 a great game don't forget to download the 1.4 patch as well. And latter on you may want to add on free mods if you need advice or help check out this link.

Well on my PC downstairs i installed the game. I'm afraid i'm not very good at it, but its also my first sim ever. Still dont understand how you plot the intercepting course and aim the torpedoes right. I nearly got destroyed by a MERCHANT SHIP that wasnt even armed on my first mission! I was cruising along off the NW Coast of France and spotted a merchant vessel. Now i understand why they head straight for you! By first 4 Torpedoes missed (some sort of storm - i dont know, my guys were wearing rain coats and i couldnt use deck gun, even though it was sunny and no rain etc) then i realise he is within 300M of me, so i dive and try and turn around. Then i notice the little red square is gone from my chart thingy (havent figured out battle map either yet...can plot a course on the other one though F5) so i surface, and the next thing i know is the little F'r has broad sided me! So i emergency dive to get out of the way, thoug the central part of Sub gets damaged (i manage to repair it). But that was enough of that, and i continued on my way.
Is it possible to sink a friendly ship at night, mistaken it for an Enemy ship? I'm pretty sure the first ship i sunk was auto-attacked by my crew at night, but then in the day i look to plot my course and the sunk ship is green, not red...hmmm.
Oh, and i tried to install the patch, but when i run the .exe it says it couldnt because it didnt know what version i have or something???!!!??? cant find anything on the forums to help me out...all game forums should be like the ones for Oblivion.

Ok. Problem solved. I think i had installed the EMEA DVD version. I kept clicking on the first link that said DVD and didnt read the rest...dont have time to play right now since i have a phone call in 20 mins...but i do believe it will help me plot the courses etc.
So i did start a new career today, and found a maybe 12-ship convoy heading to England over the Northern tip of Ireland. All transport ships of some kinda (C-2, C3, T-3 Tankers, T-2 Tankers, Small Merchant, Coastal Merchant). I sunk maybe 2. I thought i was dead on firing a torpedo, but for some reason it didnt come close to anything. Two other torpedos bounced off after being fired 300 - 600M away. Another torpedo from 500M hit the ship, then proceded to sink to the bottom of the ocean - aka straight down. The two i sunk were with my deck gun...takes about 100 shots each to sink them with HE and AP. I damaged the Small Merchant or something with the Flak Gun though...at least i blew up the cargo on the deck and started a small fire.
Is there any way to practice attacking a ship/convoy without doing some in the Career?

UPDATE - WARNING DO NOT BUY THIS X1 PRODUCT IT CONTAINS A TROJAN.
Sad News I have found out.
The X1 team are a bunch of people who ripped off SH3 but within the bounds of the law and would you buy this product knowing now it's has a Trojan. It speaks volumes about these people.
The Trojan’s name is BigBrother which seems to check on you downloading free mods for SH3 and it's been reported as causing reboot problems by one person who bought the add on game.

Update on my last post, to date there has only been one report and it dose seem to be a one off on the issue of a Trojan. X1 is not liked by the Sub sim people for many reasons, I am not buying this add on. I rather wait for SH4 due out next year.
