Wargaming with Miniatures
Does anyone else here wargame using Miniatures? I use 1/600th for air and ground combat and also for naval coastal combat. I used 1/285th-1/300th/6mm for ground combat. And 1/4800th scale for WWI/WWII naval battles. What scales do you like and use and what set of rules do you like and use? Robert

I keep meaning to start doing this, but I can't bring myself to give up £20 for a rule book I probably won't understand.

Hi ya Hawkerace. There are quite a few scales out there. There are many different ones for for every type of warfare. To some it comes down to price and detail. For example in aircraft minis 1/285th-1/300th is a very popular scale. 1/600th is another. I prefer 1/600th as they are cheaper and you get more for the price. The detail is pretty good and you can field more aircraft in a smaller area. Some people prefer 1/444th or even 1/72nd. But you would obviously pay more for less aircraft. In ground warfare there are even more scales. I would suggest that you check out some of the sites online. There are quite a few groups out there that suppports the hobby. Some of the retailers and manufacturers have pics of their products that you can look at also. I for one run a Yahoo Group for 1/600th wargaming with naval, ground and aircraft minis. What are thinking of getting into? Naval,Air,Ground? What Eras?

Hello there Joe. There are actually quite a few Free rules that you can find online and even download. And all levels of complexities and levels. You could look at them and decide what would be easy and work for you. I think I may have downloaded them all LOL. It would also depend on what scale and unit size you are looking at. Robert

Well Hawkerace that is one of the largest range of scales LOL. There is quite a few scales you could go with. Once again it depends on the unit size you want to represent and the size of battles. You can battle with units from squad on up. What do you prefer? Robert

Re: Wargaming with Miniatures
Many people are doing WW2 in 10/12mm (approx 1/144) and using rules like Blitzkrieg Commander. See the links on my sites gaming section:
Wargaming WW2 - WW2 War Games
If you are into 20mm, also check out Valiant Minis - their plastic figures are excellent and inexpensive.

Re: Wargaming with Miniatures
There are so many choices out there in rule sets and miniatures. I had quite a few scales. I finally had to just cut them down to a few LOL. Too much space and money LOL. Robert

Well for large and small scale battles on a smaller playing area I would recommend 1/285th-1/300th-6mm or 10mm-12mm. For smaller scale battles with more detailed minis then 15mm-54mm would work. I use 1/285th-1/300th-6mm for mine as you can use both air and ground forces. But I really suggest looking at the sites posted to get an idea for what you might like.

Re: Wargaming with Miniatures
If I can get the computer fixed I might be able to share some photos of our 1/35th games. They are impressive. But, 1/35th is an expensive scale to build in; particularly these days. I would make the rules I use available to anyone interested since they are self-published as are many good miniatures rules.

T.A. is right LOL. That scale is kinda spendy. I would recommend 20mm,25mm or 28mm. Also helpful would be finding out if there is a local gaming group and see what they are using.

Re: Wargaming with Miniatures
Some size comparisons of the larger scales
Forget the Math, Do the Size Comparisons
What plastic model scale goes best with 25mm wargaming figures?
