World War II - Life of a Soldier?
Hey, I'm new to these forums and came across them randomly tonight
Anyways, as I was eating my porridge, it reminded me of the army for some reason and of course I love World War 2 as a kid growing up I used to watch all the documentries and movies as much as possible, but enough about me.
My idea for a game or a mod of a game is: World War II - Life of a Soldier
In essence this would be a first person role playing game starting from childhood until the age 17 when the solidier enrol's for the army. It would follow the life of a soldier, I'll use Fallout 3 for an example, if some of you haven't played it. It's just a RPG starting from childhood.
Anyways, upon enrolling to the army, the recruitment officer ask's you the game changing question. "Where would you like to serve, son?" then allows the player(s) to choose from one of ANY role in the American, British, Canadian armies and which country to serve in. The rest is still in thought as to how an engine would be able to handle such varying content and whether any modder or company could be bothered making such a game.
Anyways, after you choose your role and country, you go off and quite literally follow the life of a solider, you control when and what he eats to how and who he shoots.
This in essence would be my dream game, I just hope someone has the heart to make it a reality, one day..

Re: World War II - Life of a Soldier?
well...its a great idea, and would be a great game, but if you were playing a World War 2 soldier, chances are...you would find yourself dead in no time.
People may also be driven away from the game because of the automatically fixed plot. World War 2, after all, has already happened. The reason Fallout 3 was such a success was because the situation was entirely fictional.

Re: World War II - Life of a Soldier?
My ideal game:
A group of players, representing governments, play a HoI type game, where they control countries in the world, technologically, economically, and politically.
Another group, representing Supreme Commanders or the different Theaters, play a similar, but more interactive role where they move around divisions and corps and command a theater (like HoI's scenario games). Grand Admirals would control fleets and convoys on a grand scale.
Then, another group, the divisional commanders, play an RTS game where the scope is bigger, and you control units the size of Battalions, and can request support from other divisions, etc. Flotilla commanders for the navy would command a large number of ships, detailing orders to squadron commanders. This is the level where the detailed maps begin to appear instead of the drab global maps of HoI.
Then, another group, the battalion commanders, play an RTS game like CoH, with individual companies and other smaller units under your command. Squadron commanders on the naval front command only a few ships, and it is here where each player controls one ship (gives orders to "sailors" NPC), and one player is the squadron leader.
Finally, the soldiers. They would play a game like a more realistic Battlefield 2, and they are commanded by a company leader. Gameplay like the PR mod for BF2 would discourage dying all the more, and overt and unjustified insubordination would result in a punishment. The weapons you use, the effectiveness of your equipment, all go back to rely on how your country's leaders are playing. Your ammo, your supplies, go back to how your divisional and theater commanders are playing. Depending on how you do in training, you will be assigned (front-line infantry, special forces, squad leaders, platoon leaders, pilots, tank crew, so on and so forth). There will be no level like this on the sea...who would want to play a gun reloader?
This game is of course, impractical to the maximum. The developers would need to design and texture a map for the whole world, down to each individual battlefield (which could be anywhere due to the nature of the game). It would also require either a huge number of bots (very demanding) or players (impossible to find so many at a single time). However, it would be fun commanding smart humans who could fight and adjust plans themselves.
For example, in CoH, if you just detail a squad to attack an MG without micro-managing it, it well get pinned and eventually slaughtered. If you command a human squad, they will see flanking possibilities and neutralize the threat using their own intuition.
Having the fate of everybody tied together is an appealing, but impossible, game.

Re: World War II - Life of a Soldier?
Yes, unfortunatly so games like described above (no matter how breifly) are near on impossible with today's logic and technology. How ever if many companies joined forces for the 'Game of the Century' there could be a silver lining?
Despite this 'joining of forces' never happening it is still quite possible for some of the 'bigger' companies to produce such a game for example: Blizzard, THQ, Microsoft(?), Ubisoft etc. The list of possible companies is endless yet they just seem to want money over appealing games IMHO..
However talking about appeal, through my eyes this game would be near on and virtually the best game to exist if eventually made but to the vast population of gamers it would be 'just another WW2 game' this is where gaming companies start to lose confidence. They will not dedicate their time and money to a game that won't aspire to some level of satisfaction and unfortunatly a game of this structure and setting wouldn't go very far in the modern world of gaming

Re: World War II - Life of a Soldier?
I have thought of the same thing, and even a great incentive.
They could use the Orange Box or more the Halflife two idea of episodes, but in this case each 'episode' is actually a different role in the army from a pilot to a spy.
