Hi there, my name is Aidan and I’m from Ireland. To be honest, I have no idea where my passion for history came from, although it was probably the Dads Army box set I got for Christmas when I was 8. Unfortunately I’m preparing for exams at the moment so quite a lot of reading has had to be put on the long finger.
My interest in ww2 is fairly broad, anything European Theater or Eastern Front is particularly interesting to me. I also have a strong interest in economics and life in Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.
Other than rugby my main hobby is re-enacting. I portray a soldier in the early war German army as well as the late war British army. I also collect militaria, often to display and talk to the public about at re-enactments.
My main areas of military research are Schützen Regiment 2 , 2. Panzer Division and the 3rd Bataillon Royal Irish Guards. Any photos or information about these units would be very much appreciated. Likewise I hope to be of assistance to anyone I can. See u guys around. Oh and I also speak German

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. As per Bronk’s request I’ve attached a few photos of some of my militaria. AF371936-7D72-4ADB-9D39-AE5D8F71BD10.jpeg 51956A5C-BA66-4014-97F1-83AF6D88B2AF.jpeg 042682B1-47AA-4967-87C4-BC2F903C45F6.jpeg C7471653-098E-4D55-BF7A-63D58FE8DCCD.jpeg

With a topic heading like that I was hoping your inspiration was Allo Allo ;)

If you are interested in the Micks, have you contacted the Guards Museum or the unit themselves? They are usually very happy to talk young Irishmen with an interest in their history. Be careful not to share a drink or you might find the Queen's shilling at the bottom of your glass....

By the way, they are just the Irish Guards. The only part of the Household division with the "Royal" it its title are the Blues and Royals, which was a merger between the "Blues", who were part of the mounted household guards of the monarch, and the "Royal Dragoon Guards." Despite their title the Royals were just the the senior line cavalry regiment.

Well I, now that you say it, it probably was! although I didn't watch as much as of Dads Army. I never even knew the Guards had their own museum! Thanks for that idea, I'll be sure to give them a shout. Also thanks for the correction, I'd never thought there was even a difference, you've most likely saved me some embarrassment down the line.

Vielen dank für die Begrüßung. Even rusty German comes in very handy when one has an interest in ww2. I’ve personally found researching and such has greatly aided my German.

Welcome. You're in a good place. Enjoy yourself. Once you're done with exams, there's plenty of good reading here. Have fun.
