    Hi,

I am new here so please excuse any errors I may make.

I was in France last week and visited the three war cemeteries in St Pol. At the St Pol War Cemetery I saw the grave of 4976651 Pte A Varney, 5th battalion Sherwood Foresters. His date of death was 15th August 1940. I know the 5th battalion were there in 1940 prior to going to Norway but my query is why would he still be there in August. Is there any way of knowing whether he died of wounds as a POW or was he hiding to avoid capture or what?

I am sure there is an interesting story there but can it be found out.

Thanks for looking and thanks for any replies.

    Richard
