My grandfather Augrlio R Martinez was in 105th Infantry and died April 27 1945 in Okinawa. I’m trying to find info on him so I can learn more about my grandfather. My father was only 4 years old when grandpa was killed so he didn't know much about him. My grandmother got married after the war and never talked about him and all the history of my grandfather sort of passed away with time. The only thing I have is a pic of his headstone in Hawaii. Can you point me in the right direction to possibly find more info about my grandfather.

    Thanks,
    Dennis Martinez

You can start by contacting the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis, Mo. Records of all US Army servicemen who were in uniform from WW1 onwards are stored there. Not sure what it would take to get what you are looking for, but this would be a start.

    Thanks A-58,
I'm going to start the process.
I know there is a lot of history about the US Army 105th regiment, they fought in some well known battles. I just wish I knew what Company he was in.

Are you absolutely certain of the date of his death and that it happened on Okinawa? Page 6 of this National Park Service document says that he was killed while serving with the 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division in the Marianas (Saipan), not on Okinawa. https://www.nps.gov/amme/learn/historyculture/upload/COHlisting.pdf

Good luck, and keep us informed of your progress.

    Maybe you've read this already.

A conflict of KIA dates/locations is common when not much information is kept intact. Looks like you have your work cut out for you.

Start you a little file to keep every tidbit of information that you dig up about your grandfather. Keep everything there and slowly but surely you'll have enough to reasonably piece together his service history.

Have you requested his IDPF (Individual Deceased Personnel File)? It might give you more information. Go through the National Archives. You might want to consider hiring a researcher for your task. I, and others, have gotten good results from Golden Arrow.

    A-58,

I saw that memorial doc and was wondering why my grandfather was listed on there. The Battle of Saipan was clearly a year earlier than the Battle of Okinawa. The only thing I have is a pic of his gravestone in Hawaii which states he died April 27, 1945.

I've been in contact with ww2research.com, has anyone dealt with this company before in regards to WWII individual research? I've contacted Golden Arrow but I haven't heard back from them.
