Did the Dutch really only have an officer as the entire platoon headquarters? It seems that he would at least have a radio operator or messenger?
Maybe not a radioman, man-portable radios were a novelty in 1940. I believe they were a US invention, though I won't be shocked to be corrected in this crowd Originally the backback radio was called a walkie-talkie, since a commander could use it while walking or standing alongside the radioman who wore it. The self-contained handheld unit, which we think of as a walkie-talkie, was first called a handie-talkie. Agree it's surprising not have a platoon sergeant, messenger, or somesuch.
