I have a roster of the 5053rd dated 5/30/45 awarding the Bronze Service Arrowhead for having participated in the Normandy invasion, and lists Harold Harris as a PFC. Lower is not listed but he may have been in the 5052nd or 5031st after the 531st.

Howdy all, my grandpa Raymond(Ray) Ellerton was a Tec-5 radio tender on an anti-tank gun crew with the HQ&Supply company 3rd Battalion of both the 531st ESR & 3053rd combat engineer battalion. Reported to Camp Edwards on July 1st, 1942. Participated in the Algeria-French Morocco, Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe & Rhineland campaigns. Discharged from Camp McCoy August 13, 1945.
Was TDY with the 38th General Service Regiment upon their arrival on d-day + 4 clearing mines & draining flooded areas until July '44.
Was TDY special assignment with 15 others from 531st ESR HQ&Supply co. to the 2nd Battalion 531st ESR mapping & detailing German fortifications in the Cherbourg area from July '44 until the 531st ESR disbanded & reclassified as the 3053rd Combat Engineer Battalion in August '44.

I have quite a bit of info to post/upload as time allows...

I used to work with a surgeon that landed with the 3053rd, but I don't know which company. He had not gone to medical school yet, though. He was also present at Sicily, Italy (twice I think), Utah and the Rhine River crossing.

He was a great man. His name was Richard Harris.
