"Émile Chaline , born on February 22, 1922 in Brest and died May 16, 2020, was a French Resistance fighter.
Member of the Free French Naval Forces, he completed his career as a general officer in the French Navy at the rank of Vice-Admiral of the Wing.
The son of Emile Chaline, first master gunsmith, and of Jeanne Le Saint, Émile Chaline did his secondary studies at the Lycée de Brest. His father, of Russian origin, is a worker in the arsenal of Brest. Graduated as an engineer from the Naval School , certified as a staff, qualified anti-submarine lieutenant , he was a student at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth in Great Britain in 1940.
Engaged in the Free French Naval Forces ( 1 st July 1940) in extremis with the help of his uncle, soldier Charles Chaline then responsible for boarding the Meknes . Émile Chaline participated in the Battle of the Atlantic aboard the destroyer Leopard and the corvettes Commandant Drogou and Roselys , as well as in the landing operations in Normandy in June 1944.
From 1967 to 1969, Émile Chaline was deputy to the head of the military cabinet of Prime Minister Georges Pompidou , then, from 1969 to 1971, to the chief of the private staff of Georges Pompidou, President of the Republic. He was then the first commander of the CIN Saint Mandrier (Naval Instruction Center), grouping together all of the navy's specialization schools, at all grades, until 1974; his iron fist in a velvet glove to bring together all the schools of the navy, reputed to be very independent, will be worth the nickname of "Chalingrad" at CIN. He will then be naval attaché in Washington from 1974.
He was maritime prefect of Cherbourg between 1979 and 1980.
From 1988 to 2020, he chaired the Association of Free French Naval Forces."
