During the World War One Admiral Darlan, who entered the French Navy in 1899, was thrice mentioned In dispatches. In 1936 he became Vice-Admiral, then the highest rank in the French Navy, but by a decree of June 6, 1939 he became Admiral of the Fleet, a rank which had not been given in France since 1870.
