Today is the Aussie Rules Grand final between the Sydney Swans and Hawthorn (Hawks)... Do yourself a favour and tune in...Ed Shearen and Tom Jones are opening...
Fortunately, something interesting happened during the match: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b91s7p02p3g
Aussie rules is great game, when I lived in Melbourne I watched the Demons play a few times and I played in a youth league. There is even an Aussie rules league here in Chicago, I managed to play in a couple matches when I first moved to the city in 2002.
The "Ds" are struggling these days...But will stay in the league because everyone loves the Melbourne Demons...What was/were the names of the team/s you played in?
It was a local Melbourne team, I think we were actually called the Demons, little-Demons, or something similar. This was back in the 80's, so it's been a while! The demons haven't done well as long as I can remember. It had been ages since they won the Final back in the 80's, and they haven't won since.
AFL used to be broadcast on ESPN here and I would watch it. This was in the 1980s, before the internet was available everywhere, so figuring out the rules was an issue. But I watched enough to eventually understand the game. It reminded me a bit like an organized fight, but I think I would have enjoyed playing it. It is a man's game.
It's also egalitarian like Australia...there is a position for everyone... Very tall vs small and stocky Skinny vs over weight Thug vs pretty boy Muscle man vs sprinter Average joe vs average joe Suburb vs suburb - city vs city. Queensland and New South Wales play Rugby, league and Union...the rest of Australia plays and follows AFL...but since AFL is by far the more successful of the two, it has made inroads into 'sacred rugby territory' and there now are the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns QLD and the Sydney Swans and Greater Western Sydney Giants (what a poxy name)NSW The Swans were in this years final...Dare I liken it to real battle where the most unlikely people seem to step up to the plate and surprise and inspire everyone...
Was a CFL fan. Since bringing in a lot of US players, don't care anymore. Used to be able to follow each CFL player over 5-10-15 years. Now it is constant change...If any CFL player could play in the NFL, they would...If we could keep our game 90 percent Canadian content, I'd go back. The rules and field are better. But the talent will always be in the NFL.
You mean Canadian Football League Pops? Aussie rules? Last week we had the Bi-annual world series "international" rules against Ireland...The Irish play Gaelic Football...similar enough to Aussie rules to combine...it takes a month or so for the Australians to get used to kicking the round (soccer) ball... The Irish always come away "pissed off" because Gaelic football doesnt have tackleing...and we are masters of the tackle...plus we are fully professional where as Gaelic football is still an amateur affair...the Irish look like under 18s compared to the Aussies! We monster them all round the field...its a hoot! We kicked away to a 30 odd point lead by half time, but the Irish rallied, changed their tactics and came back at us hard...we withstood the onslaught to finish winners for the championship...40 thousand people turned up to watch and the TV channel was popular that night too...so the competitiion will contiunue...

Well another Premiership Grand Final has been decided. The Mighty Magpies won in the dying seconds after a heart stopping game that had 11 lead changes. KISS started the final to a raptured crowd Hundreds of kids joined the fun Collingwood coach Craig McRae came on stage after the win and said that it was already the best day of his life as his daughter was born at 7 o'clock in the morning and now in the afternoon he is a premiership coach! And guess what he named his daughter? "Maggie". American Mason Cox celebrates his first premiership (Most players never get a premiership medal)
