    Well, with all due respect to Jentschura et al. Their book also shows the Kaga(1942) with three catapults, and Akagi(1942) with two.

    The only carrier catapults that I have heard the Japanese having were for early testing purposes on either Kaga or Akagi. The catapults faired poorly and were quickly removed, much like the flywheel cats on the US Lexington class. Since the carrier aircraft of the time could takeoff unassisted, there was no pressing need in the 1920s, either operationally or fiscally, for developing decent catapults for carriers.

    Maybe it's time for a separate thread on Japanese carrier catapults?
