I am looking for good books on Armour; camouflage & markings.

My area of special interest is the Western Desert 1940 - 1942.

    I already own...

Tanks of WWII illustrated. (Chris Ellis)
British Tanks in N. Africa. (Bryan Perrett)
    Almark No 2 : British N. Africa. ( Kenneth M Jones)

I am looking for further reccomendations, especially covering Axis equipment. There is an Almark book to accompany the British one, but I have only ever seen it in the Tank Museum Library at Bovington.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks. Dave.

The best answer I can give you is to check out Squadron/Signal Publications. They cover plenty of Axis vehicles including a book dedicated to Italian tanks. They also have a three book series called 'Panzer Colors'.
Most good hooby shops on this side of the pond stock them. They are well priced for the info they contain.Usually between 9 and 10 dollars.

The information in them is largely inaccurate, though.

It might be useful to present an accurate source instead, then.

For once, I would be more interested in the pictures than the text. Unless Christian means that the pictures, photos & captions are also flawed?

    A few suggestions:

"Armor Camouflage & Markings, North Africa 1940 - 1943" by George Bradford (Preston, Ontario 1971)

Concord Publications: "Armor of the Deutsches Afrikakorps" (7021); "Panzers in North Africa" (7043); "US Tank Battles in North Africa and Italy 1943-45" (7051)

The only accurate commercially available source for early-war camouflage colour tones is Panzer Tracts 1-2. The Osprey New Vanguard books made by Jentz and Doyle (typically with drawings by Peter Sarson) offers the only colour plates which I know to be accurate. The colours themselves in the New Vanguard books are not accurate, though.

It is also important to bear in mind, that no original paint chips have yet been found of the German Dunkelgelb, so no commercially available source has a correct rendering of this colour.

The captions in Panzer Colors are also flawed.

    Thanks Christian :)

Do you have a title or series name/number for the Osprey new vanguard books by Jentz & doyle please.
