What type Artillary gun is your favourite? Mine is the infamous railway gun, causeing damage from great distances. Please tell me what piece of artillary intrests or intrigues you the most. Thanks, Private Mic von Krate
I like mortars, if that counts, I like the name "mortar". It's cool. And I'd like to learn about them, the damege they do, and how they stack up against cannons.
Mortars are basically a low velocity, high ballistic arc, muzzle loading small arty piece. I have yet to see a mortar with a barrel longer than 15 times their caliber (L/15). You have WW2 mortars down to 60 mm that can be carried around by infantry, giving them some mobile, ranged firepower. Useful for attacking targets close by (high arc), and used mostly on a small tactical scale.
I believe the mortars biggest advantage is that it gives front line infantry officers degree of artillery support that is under their direct control. As apposed to the big stuff which will have to be requested.
Personally, my favourites are the massed batteries of 11" -- 18" guns, heavily protected and highly mobile (speeds in excess of 36km / h) In other words, a dreadnought battleship or battlecruiser Tom
I like mortars, too, though they are really only a poor substitute for real artillery. They are useful on a small scale and extremely inconvenient for infantry since their high arc tends to make conventional cover completely useless. A rightly feared, mobile and effective weapon overall. In the end, though, there's nothing like a few regiments of 8-inch guns...
My favourite artillery piece? My goodness, there's so many! The German 17cm K in Morser Lafette carriage has always been one of my favourites. It was one of the first to incorporate a dual-recoil system. The carriage was of very high quality- a circular firing platform allowed the gun to traverse 360 degrees.
my all times favorite is the monster of monsters: 80 cm K(E) a.k.a. gustav gerat and why? cos it is huge!!!! ( i do not care is it was useless)
What is the most durable object that the most powerful mortar ever created can destroy? What can standard mortars destroy?
The most powerful mortar ever would porbably be the Karl Gerät 60cm mortar made by the Germans before WW2 to deal with fortifications like the Maginot line. Guns like those had no trouble smashing through tens of meters or reinforced concrete. Standard mortars, though, are usually of a pretty small calibre (standard being about 81mm for infantry units) so their blast is not likely to be as effective as even the lightest artillery.
Arguably not Artillery either. Being a cannon does not by itself qualify as being an artillery piece.
Has anyone heard about the 120mm mortar? I heard it was used by the 75th Ranger Regiment (the numberand diameter maybe wrong though). Bigger diameter, but how much damage can it really do? Oh, and for fav artillery, I'll throw in howitzers too, 'cause their names are cool and they can do some real damage. Same as cannons, I think.
There's the Russian 120mm mortar, favoured by the Germans for its great power and often used when captured. Some were found left behind by the 1st SS in La Gleize where they abandoned all their heavy equipment. The Americans had their own heavy mortar, but the calibre escapes me. I believe it was primarily intended to fire chemical rounds.
i'll love any piece unconditionally as long as it fires very fast, fires huge shells, or launches lots of rockets
