I just completed this piece for the Wings Museum: Any input would be appreciated! - Ron Cole Cole's Aircraft Aviation Art by Ron Cole
Is this based on any historic mission, or is it imaginary? The big problem with the 'Kate' (B5N2) and the Nakajima 'Val' by 1945 was the utter lack of aircrew to fly them. This picture is quite striking and well done. It seems to represent the 'Kate' conducting a level bombing mission, a role it was capable but not suited for. To my knowledge, 'Kate' was a little too slow for a dive bomber, and lacked air-brakes, so operating as a level bomber and at night, it would had to have been fairly lucky to achieve this hit. It's target would most likely have to be staionary or moving very slowly. Why is the Russian warship using a searchlight? is this historical? I certainly cannot recall that much air activity that far north by the IJN, assuming that this is an IJN 'Kate' and not launched by the Army Air Service. Anyhow, this quality picture certainly gets my thumbs up for asthetics....now lets hear a little about the historicity from the artist! Good one Mr. Cole!
