Bergetiger

    Hey guys. I was curious about more information about the Bergetiger. Wikipedia doesn't give a whole lot of info on it, and thought that you guys could help! Thanks in advance.

    Looks like a special support vehicle in my eyes, and not a whole lot of information on the vehicle really. None that I can find that is a page of info.

    Bergepanzer VI Ausf.E Bergetiger

    In November 1944, a Tiger I of semi-production damaged close to Anzio in Italy was converted by the sPzAbt 508 into a special vehicle of supports. Its gun was removed and its turret fixed. On the turret was installed a crane of rise. It was lost between the 20 and 25 Mai 1944 and then captured by the British. This version was considered by much like a vehicle of recovery, as would indicate it its denomination of Bergepanzer VI, but the truth is can be very different. It is in completely utopian verity to think that a winch to handle through arm by means of cranks by two men can recover a tank, which more is a heavy tank of 57 tons like the Tiger. The frail bracket installed on the turret would not resist in more to the terrible pressure. To abound in this direction it is enough to observe the conversion of the Panther, Bergepanther whose turret and combat compartment were replaced by a powerful motorized winch perfectly suited it to tractor draw a heavy vehicle. If Bergetiger were intended for such a use it would have accomodated such a device. Bergetiger, did not lay out of more than any standard hardware embarked on any tank of recovery, like heavy chains, devices of fixing, cables, bars extensible or of the structural timber... Bergetiger was not in all probability not a vehicle of recovery, indeed why use a hand winch when to attach a cable (loops laid out with the back and front of Tiger or Panther were planned for this use) between the tank in difficulty and the another tank was a solution definitely more effective.

    The bracket was limited still too much to carry out tasks of workshop as to withdraw engines... its form was not typical cranes of workshop moreover much domaged medium tanks were available to be equipped with a crane of workshop, why a Tiger, much too invaluable like tank. Bergetiger was intended to transport explosive loads? Surely not heavy loads because the lack of sufficient protections, would have been much too dangerous for two poor guys charged to operate the winch. It is more probable than the crane of Bergetiger was used to deposit loads of 200-300 kg while offering thanks to the shielding of the Tiger a definitely better protection under the fire of the enemy than that offered by small and light Borgward DCL used normally for this task. Another interesting idea was the use of the winch of Bergetiger to handle a sweeping mass of mines. These two last ideas seem most probable, one can in all logic give up the role of vehicle of recovery because of the weakness of the winch device of whereas any Tiger could better do with a simple cable of towing. Bergepanzer Tiger received SdKfz.185 designation identical to that of the hunter of tank Jagdtiger! Bergetiger was built to only one specimen, perhaps three?
