At 1.30 on the morning of Tuesday, September 10, a time bomb exploded on the terrace of Buckingham Palace just outside the King's sitting room. It had been dropped a few hours before by one of the German raiders, and when it went off it wrecked the swimming pool and a corner of the terrace, and also broke scores of windows. Their Majesties were not in the Palace at the time, but shortly after it had exploded they went to inspect the damage (Above). In the second photograph the King talks with Churchill while the Queen chats with the demolition squad.
