I know some of you have seen these before but I'll post them here for those of you that haven't. I know Martin Bull will enjoy the Then & Now shots. I was in Budapest for a friend's wedding. Thought it would be a good opportunity to do some then and nows from 1944 & 1945 from After The Battle Number 40 and Battle for Budapest by Krisztian Ungvary. I've also including some shots of the Soviet Memorial which is fenced off, a shame as I wanted to get close up.
Great pixs Went to Budapest just before they had the big riots Did you go to the old police cells where the Germans carrried out there torture & the russian carriied on where the Germans left of
Hey Wessex, it seems like you are a real globetrotter! Nice pictures. I have a couple too but I never realized how it was in 1945.
You're getting good at this sort of thing, WW ! Excellent posting - like many of us, I knew hardly anything of Budapest in WWII.....
Thanks for the kind words. Until this year I knew very little about the Eastern Front so used this trip to help educate myself. I recommend the Ungvary book, some excellent maps and masses of info. Was able to read up about the fighting in the area of our hotel. Seen two major European rivers and their part in WW2 this year, the Seine and the Danube. Was hoping to get to Belgium this October but with more postal strikes looming I need to save my money. Planning to do the Rhine next summer so will do some then & nows then.
