I am doing some research into a little-known 25mm Vickers automatic gun which was made in Italy by Vickers-Terni during WW1 and subsequently sold to the Swedish navy for arming some submarines. Its initial designation in Swedish service was 25mm Kulspruta M/22 but in 1937 this was changed to 25,4mm apjäs M/22. I know that "kulspruta" means machine gun, but can anyone tell me the significance of the change in designation - what does "apjäs" mean? Tony Williams Homepage: http://www.quarry.nildram.co.uk
Apjäs is short for artilleripjäs. Pjäs could be used for almost any type of artillery, and artilleri is, well, artillery.
