The Germans used a large number of horses In Normandy. Much of the transport for second line and static Infantry divisions was horse-drawn, as were the limbers for the guns. The sight of dead horses became commonplace during the campaign and added to the stench of decay that hung over the battlefield.

I had heard of this before but the picture really captures how 'normal' it would be to have decomposing horses strewn around Normandy. It makes you feel bad to think of the slaughter of not only so many humans but animals as well.

Terrible sights and smells was just about everywhere in Normandy. The carcases of dead animals was often used by soldiers to take cover when under attack.
