The Leopard 2A6, IMO. We cannot make a complete, objective analysis of them because a lot of the information is classified. The Merkava is probably the best MBT in the world as of now.
To Panzerman Why is the Merkava probably the best MBT and why would the Leopard beat the Challenger 2 and the Abrams? They both outgun the Leopard with their 120mm guns. The Leopard only has a 105mm gun.
Re: To Panzerman That is not correct. The Leopard 1 is perheps equipped with an 105mm but Leopard 2 has an 120mm gun.

Re: To Panzerman As DanskPanser has said, this is wrong. The Leopard 2A6 has a 120 mm L/55, a superior gun to that of the Abrams. IMO, the Merkava is the best tank in the world because it offers: # The best crew protection. # A potent 120 mm gun # Probably the best suspension of all modern tanks, being able to drive at high speeds through the rocky Golan heights # The possibility to act as an APC - carrying an infantry squad of 6 # Internal 60 mm mortar # Cool looks # Well developed, sloping armor
I see. So if the Merkava and Leopard 2 are so good, why doesn't every army trash their existing tanks and get some of those? They just about render every other tank ever made useless.
Israel still gets quite a bit of US aid/funding which comes with a lot of strings attached and since the Merk development was partially funded by this they're unable to sell them to third parties, or so the story goes. Modern MBTs are expensive pieces of equipment, why spend the money when you already have something that, while it may not be top of the line, still can get the job done.
