    24 January 1944.

    The 179th RCT, less its Commanding Officer, disembarked on the shores near Nettuno. The first of the Thunderbirds had arrived on the Anzio Beachhead.

    23 January:
    During the day:

    9 Commando encountered elements of Aufkl.Abt. 129 of 29 Pz. Gren.Div.

    1st Div (2nd Bde. Grp.) advanced one to two miles inland.

    Ranger Force advanced north on the Anzio-Carroceto Road.

    3rd Div advanced up to four miles inland. Four bridges across the Mussolini Canal in front of the 15th Infantry on the far right were blown.

    Unloading of 3rd (Br.) Brigade slowed badly by mines and soft sand, shifted to Anzio.

    1st Division completed debarkation at Anzio.

    504th Parachute Infantry unloaded.

    24 January:
    0001:

    All bridges over the main and left branches of the Mussolini Canal were either blown or under control.

    3rd Division patrols were in Borgo Piave and Littorio.

    15th Infantry had crossed the left branch of the Canal and the Ficoccia River. But encountered intensifying resistance from FJ Pz.Gren.Rgt. 1 HG.

    30th Infantry occupied Conca.

    1st Division advanced along the west side of the Anzio-Albano Road.

    24th Guards Brigade advanced to Carroceto, but were forced to withdraw under heavy mortar and MG fire.

    2nd Brigade secured the south bank of the Moletta River.

    1-36th FA (-A & B) unloaded

    36th Engineer Combat Regiment unloaded

    2nd Special Service Brigade withdrawn

    Tank status as of 1200: 105 medium and 17 light operational. 1 medium in repair

    24 January:

    14 AOK takes over command of the beachhead from I Fsch.Jg. Korps
