I was looking over my grandfathers DD214 had had a question. You guys already helped with one, regarding the Bronze star listed on there, that it was most likely retroactive to his CIB.

My question has to do with "section 55: remarks"; in there it lists "lapel button issued, ASR score 2 sep 45 63, CIB, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal"

Question 1: what is the ASR score?
Question 2: Why would the CIB, Bronze Star Medal, and Purple Heart be listed under the remarks section instead of under "awards and citations"?

    Thanks for your help

The ASR score was his Advanced Service Rating(ASR) score...Basically, how many points you needed to be sent home.
The wiki can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Service_Rating_Score

Only those awards(combat awards) are listed because they were each worth 5 points toward his total score.

    Hope this helps.

Yes very much, thank you for the Wiki!

So if I'm reading this right, those are listed in a different section because they have to do with the total score for the ASR?

To be fair, don't take it as my answer as gospel...all awards and citations should be listed in box 33 "Decorations and Citations".

But, since these 3 were also listed in box 55, I can only presume that the personnel officer put them there for that reason. However, it seems to have been up to the whim of the personnel officer filling out the DD214 - Some have included such items, and some have left them out.

Could that explain why I have what appears to be ribbons that were sewn onto a uniform and the good conduct has two bronze knots but no mention of it on the DD 214?

Odd, they should all be listed in Box 33 "Decorations and Citations".

Could that just be an over site by someone? It also does not mention the foreign service clasp for his American Defense Service medal

Second question, The "patch type" ribbons and CIB I have, what would those be for instead of the actual ribbons and CIB?

    Couple things:
In Re Box #55 : This is the "General Notes Section" and Takao is right on the money as for why they are listed there. There should also be note regarding no time loss under AR670- whatever.

The sew on type cloth CIB was a pretty common item. A lot of guys would have these made and later sew them on their HBT / Fatigues or field jackets. I have also seen them embroidered directly onto the wool uniform shirt.

The "Lapel Pin" refers to the "Honorable Discharge Lapel Pin" which was intended to be worn in civilian attire and was a smaller version of the "Ruptured Duck" worn over the right breast pocked of the dress uniform.

It was an Army Reg. referring to loss of time due to being unable to stand duty. I have never seen it on a 45 or later DD214.

Another question about the DD 215, section 31, military qualification

    Rifle M1: Presuming M1 Garand
    44: Year? 1944
But not sure what the MKM means, any one know?

The remarks box is a catch-all. Box #33 is full and the overflow information goes in "remarks".
The ASR score and " lepal button" are always included in #55.

Never found that among his possessions after going through the house, though his dress uniform does have this on it, which the image looks identical to the image you posted
