funny question I know, but as army dogs in active service, were they I.D.tagged,did any make a rank for their services..?
Right, the K-9 has a name tag on the collar stating that; "My name is Rex, I’m the best friend of 353364331-T41-42-O"
just got the infinitive answer form ron @ uswardogs .. "Military dogs are tattooed in their left ear with a ID number . No dog tags."
There ya go, I was thinking of tattooing as a reply myself since the other stuff as gear might be misplaced by the handler, "scratched/rubbed" off by the dog, or otherwise simply lost. A tattoo is the obvious answer.
Right, back on our farm/ranch we had this Marquise d’ Sade looking tool for tattooing the inside upper lip and ears of our registered Appaloosa horses and Charolais cattle. A kind-a pliers device with a set of jaws that on one side held interchangeable blocks with letters and numbers in reverse, made out of needle-like stainless steel and the opposite side was a blank "back-up" pad. You would choose the combination of letters and numbers out of a holding case, rinse them in rubbing alcohol, and "apply" the pressure to the animals lip/ear hard and quick. The thing would only "puncture" the skin in one quick operation and while it was bleeding a bit you would rub the special antiseptic ink into the mark. It also coagulated the blood really fast and numbed the wound at the same time.
Guess it depends on dogs of what country Ray . Jerry dogs wore a 'erkunnungsmarke' specially for dogs ,so called 'hundemarke'. See the example below : And no, those didn't state : "Mein hund " or 'Blondi'...

good uns,so! to be fair these dogs tags would be rare and quite collectable heinrich, can't say I've ever run across them before,ray..
Well it was the ear on most calves, but since ears can be altered on a colt with slits and such there was usually an inner lip tat. You had to send off to the Appaloosa horse club and Charolais registry to get the numbers for your animals. You didn't get to choose the numbers yourself, they were unique for that breed and that animal. We would get "x" number of male and female numbers each year for our use for registration of the different animals. And while it sounds painful, and it might have been for a short period of time, I doubt it was as distrubing and painful as other farm/ranch operations. Branding, dew-lapping, under-over bite/notching of ears and such. Here is a pic of one of those tools.
That was a great show. It was interestnig to see that after 65 years these tough battle hardened vets got choked up when they talked about their dogs.
