Dutch Resistance groups were formed almost immediately after the country's defeat in 1940. Like other groups in occupied Europe, the Dutch organised sabotage acts against the despised Moffen, their nickname for the Germans. Their most valuable service to the Allied cause was in providing information on German troop movements. However, in one of their intelligence coups in 1941, the Germans captured radio transmitters and codes from Dutch SOE operators and kept up regular fake transmissions, with disastrous results for the Allies. Agents and supplies were sent from London straight into the hands of the enemy. This made British Intelligence suspicious of any information from Dutch sources, with fatal consequences. Despite warnings from the Dutch Resistance concerning German armoured divisions near Arnhem , the drops went ahead, and landed paratroopers right in the midst of the enemy.
