Of the 3 caliber of AA guns on WWII ships, round per round, which caliber was most effective? I'd assume the 5" with proximaty fuse shells was most effective, then 40mm Bofors, then 20mm Oerlikons, right? Anyone know what the average hit ratio was per round? Like did they need to fire about 10 x 5"/38 shells to score a hit? Or how many per caliber?

Thanks for posting the links. My dad was on a 40mm twin-mount gun crew, first as a loader, then trainer (aimer). This was on the Fanshaw Bay. He said that his mount was given credit for downing a kamikaze, what type and which action I don't know. He also mentioned that one Wildcat was taken under fire and downed by the fleet because of a non-functioning IFF. He always felt bad for that pilot.

I have been trying to find the maximum ceiling and elevation for Light MGs (.303, .30 cal, 6.5mm, 7.62mm, 7.92mm & 8mm) used on moblie mounts in the early part of WW2, they were used as the main AA weapon of the infantry Battalions, but scant data is available on them.

If they showed up in naval mountings look in NavWeaps - Naval Weapons of the World - 1880 to Present
    For instance for the Germans:
    Germany Naval Guns
Where they have date for 20mm, 37mm, and 40mm guns as well as larger ones.
    such as German 2 cm/65 (0.79") C/30 and C/38
    Range @ 45 degrees5,360 yards (4,900 m)AA Ceiling @ 85 degrees12,140 feet (3,700 m)

You might also find some interesting data if you look around at http://www.quarry.nildram.co.uk/miltech.htm if you haven't already.
Here's some info on some 7.62s but may not have anything new for you http://www.jaegerplatoon.net/AAMG.htm
poking around at this site may produce some data as well http://world.guns.ru/machine/at/schwarzlose-m07-12-e.html
    or at http://trubusprabowo.blogspot.com/2009/07/anti-aircraft-machineguns.html
This ones a bit out of period but may be close http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AA-52_machine_gun

Thanks Lwd, some off the stats for the calibre weapons I have mentioned can be assumed from the links above.
    Effective Range = 600m
    Maximum Range = 1000m
I think this is what most of the AA Machine guns could Achive.
