This is a viet nam book but what he says applies to ww2 casualties as well, Seldom have I been more engrossed by a soldiers personal recollections, a tour of duty in Nam was 13 months, Rick was a point man on many patrols deep in country. he was training a new man to do his job when he tripped a wire and started the ambush that nearly killed Rick- the rest of the story is about his evacuation and his recovery at great Lakes Naval Hospital not far from his home and mine . this is the real battle, the one to save his legs and to endure the pain of daily debrading and dressing changes and the agony of fellow soldiers and sailors and marines as they go thru the aftermath of serious wounds. You will get sick if you read this book, but you will understand wounded vets better!!
