I just finished reading Paul Andert's book "Unless You Have Been There". I'm glad you guys recommended it. It helped me understand a lot about what my Dad must have gone through. I thought it was generally well written and is the type of information about combat that you rarely get. Paul is an unusually candid person. I believe he is still going strong at 93 or 94.

My dad was hospitalized during that time frame due to frostbite as well. He was in Company E 41st Armored Infantry Regiment, and left battlefield for that reason on Thanksgiving Day 1944. He told me his hospital stays and rehab stops were in Liage, Belgium, England, Boston, Camp Carson, CO, and Miami, FL. He resumed active duty at Ft. Knox.
