Just found out from FB that this irrepressible Southern gentleman passed away yesterday. Never had the chance to meet, but always impressed by his knowledge and demeanor. The world's an infinitely poorer place.
This is tragic news. Gaines was a true gentleman with an incredible base of knowledge. I will miss our conversations.
This makes me sad. I also never met him in person, but his posts were insightful and made me think. His gentle way will be missed. Gaines was one of the good guys.
Man, I hate to hear of his passing. I think Gaines would like to be remembered as a real Southern Gentleman. He had strength of character, intellect, was congenial, and gentle in his discourse with others, everything we should all strive to be. Lou, you ought to check with Otto to see if we can have an area to memorialize certain outstanding members who have passed. Like our own little National Cemetary. Gaines and Clint, brndirt1, are two that immediately come to mind that need to be there.
Sad news. I hope he worked right up til the end. He was an amazing architect and still going strong last I remember. I second Price ! We've had some outstanding members who many of us will not forget.
Bugger. A rare old-school gent on the Internet, and doubtless in what always seemed to be a very full life. If they read this, my sincere condolences to his nearest & dearest. ~Adam
Oh my, how did I miss this! It is just awful. I had a wonderful time with him several years ago, touring a B-17, B-24, and a P-51 where he lived. A very dear friend of mine was a student of his at Auburn University. https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/name/gaines-blackwell-obituary?id=38517250
There’s no way to replace him. A big library just burned down when he left. Never met him either but we had many private chats and enjoyed every one of them. See you on the other side friend.
