On May 19 General Maxime Weygand was appointed Chief of the French General Staff and Commander-in-Chief in all theatres of war. A young man for all his 73 years, he was recalled from his post as Allied Commander in the Near East to deal with the situation created by the German invasion. For nine years General Weygand was Chief of Staff to Foch, and became known as his Shadow.
