Recently finished reading the memoir German Boy by Wolfgang Samuel. The story begins rather dramatically as Wolfgang, his mother and sister are evacuating the city of Sagan and are fleeing west to escape the Soviets, as the end is becoming inevitable. This event is the first of many that the family must endure to survive the end of the world conflict and beginning of the Cold War. I was amazed at times that I was reading a memoir as the story unfolded as a planned narrative. Of course, there were a few moments throughout the read that I needed to furrow my brow at the content, but overall, an excellent piece of literature. Would highly recommend it.
