Hello guys , This is my newest German case. It is flat (about the size of a laptop) and is dated 1941 + markings , including the swastika . It says "Shutzhaube" = protection hood , but for what? Any help would be appreciated.
Almost looks like a carrying case for a Tellermine-though I know that's not one. Im sure it's something to do with Artillery though.
answer found hopefully..It's a container for a Gasschutzhaube. (Gasmask for face injured people who couldn't wear an ordinary gasmask)
about 40cm x 40cm. I checked further and yes it's a Gasschutzhaube für Kopfverletze. if you google with this name you'll find several ones. They even had a different version in WWI and this model is a more advanced one. Apparently it's not so rare, but widely unknown and will sell (empty ) between 15 and 60 euros.
Thats interesting and glad you guys founr it out. Reason I thought it had soemthing dealing with artillert, is because those who "worked" with very heavy Artillery-such as Railroad guns, also had some sort of a piece of headgear they wore when firing those heavy guns. Something like those face and neck protection hoods that you see the Germans wearing when firing those: "Guns of Navarone" in that movie. However, I THINK those were made out of Asbestos?
I thought about that too Carl, the problem comes from the translation "Haube" which could be cover /protection or ..hood. So it is easy to get on the wrong track.
Hi Skipper, that and my German skils are bad on alot of things. Ofcourse, that can also be blamed on the Germsn for because-take the word Captain for exaple--they have at least three terms that mean the samething i/e/ Rittmeister and SS Hauptsturmfuhrer. They sure love to make simple things confusing ;-))
found these pics,55 were found in scrapyard! skipper and a bit more info,ray..This steel box held a rubber/fabric hood with an oval celluloid disc so the wearer could see out from . This gas mask hood was to be worn only by men with head wounds during a gas attack . As gas warfare against ships was unheard of during WWII nor very practical this would not be found on U-boats ! This item must been intended for ground KM forces such as Flak units or other ground fighting units that may come under gas / chemical warfare attack . A standard GM41 or 42 gasmask filter would be screwed into the threaded socket on the front of this gas hood .
