I didn't know that there was any color footage of Barbarossa; this is really cool. Looking at that film, though, one would think that the German Army was a lot more mechanized than it actually was.
Nowhere near as mechanised as is popularly supposed these days, throughout the war the German army was heavily reliant on horse drawn transport and only those infantry divisions attached to the spearpoint units would be properly mechanised, for a lot of the infantry they were true footsloggers.
Indeed. During the fighting in France in 1944, many GIs were astonished at how many horses the Germans used. They had heard all the tales of blitzkrieg, then found all of those horses, and couldn't get the two to mesh.
Comment on the music for the first youtube-link. Since when were the germans the last of the mohicans?
I know that a mistranslation/misunderstanding by the Germans lead to the assuption that they were motorised, when in fact they were not.
I know that the Italian troops on the Eastern Front had no desire whatsoever to be there. Can't say that I blame them, either.
some italian units fought with great zeal and elan on the russian front , alas ,soon enough , the emensity of russia and the hardy red army merely swallowed them up , like it did the slovines ,rummanians ,austrians ,czeks and germans ...
No doubt. I should have qualified my statement to read that MOST Italian troops on the Eastern Front had absolutely no desire to be there.
I know of Russians (mostly poles) that fought for the German Army but did the russians allow Germans to come over to there sides to fight there fellow germans.
Poles aren't Russians, and infact as far as I'm aware very few if any Poles served in the German military.
