The following item was given to me by my grandmother yesterday following my grandfather's passing.
He was in the Navy Seabeas in the South Pacific (Phillipines,New Guinea) and I was told this came from a Japanese soldier.

Please hekp me to figure out what this item is exactly.

It does look like a baton (i am sure you are correct) it is 16" long and approx. 1.5" across on the widest point on top. 2 metals which look woven at first glance, but the lighter metal seems to be the core of it and the darker metal looks inlayed on top.
If anyone knows more about this, I would greatly appreciate more feedback.
My grandfather is Italian American, but I am told that this is from either Phillipines or New Guinea from WW2 from a Japanese soldier... who knows, it may just be an old Italian baton from older relatives.

any idea what the origin is? a value of this baton would be great ( I DO NOT plan on selling it ANYTIME soon), but would be nice to tell my grandmother about it.
THANKS TO ANYONE WHO CAN HELP or direct me in the right direction to find more info.
    Thanks Sniper.

My best guess, an "aiming stick". The battery commander used something similar to give the general direction to the trainers and elevators of AA guns.

Caveat, I've never seen one in color before.

I merged these threads since they are for the same information. I also moved it to the Information Requests forum for clarity and to generate more views.

One of the places I've seen the aiming sticks in action was in footage of IJN AA batteries in action, so don't limit your search to the IJA.

Could it be possible that it is some sort of hand carried flag pole? Something similar to whats being carried here?

Possible.. it does have a ball on top and another sort of in the middle. Could support a flag I suppose. So many suggestions... hopefully we can ID this.
    THANKS GUYS

Now that I looked at this again... the ball in middle looks too far up towards the top. The flag would be TOOO SMALL.
It is heavy... and would definately make a good baton.
    We'll keep digging!
    night all.

Or an NCO's "starter", used to motivate slow troopers?
