I live in Melbourne, Australia and have visited Guadalcanal numerous times since 1995. There is always something new to see and relics to collect.
Hi and welcome, you lucky dog! Guadalcanal and Normandy are the two places I would most like to visit. Some of us have enjoyed reading this Japanese soldier's diary about his time there. I'm sure you'll be able to identify many of the places he is writing about http://www.ww2f.com/topic/50701-diary-of-a-japanese-2nd-lt-on-guadalcanal/?p=557535
I was going to make a single visit to the Canal in 1995, but now it 10 trips later. It has a real feel to it and when you see the terrain then the literature clicks. Check out my pics at www.guadalcanal.homestead.com. I always wanted to go to Guadalcanal, Gettysburg and Little Bighorn..I guess one out of three will have to do.
Same here. I've been to Gettysburg several time. Very hard to look at without seeing how hard it must have been.
closest i ever got to gettysburg was the DVD of the film. ah well, Guadalcanal was the "Gettysburg of the Pacific" View attachment 19669
Here are some links to maps and pictures of Gettysburg. Can you do the same for Guadalcanal? http://www.gettysburg.com/bog/batmaps1.htm http://www.history.com/topics/battle-of-gettysburg/photos#
yes, i have sundry Guadalcanal maps. GGOGLE EARTH is a good orientation tool. check out www.guadalcanal.homestead.com
Thanks for the link. I looked at a few photos, but I put the site in my Bookmarks for later leisurely investigation.
Wow, just wow! Thanks for such an incredible website, I just loved the "then and now" photographs, as well as the photographs from your trips. One of my uncles on my mother's side was in the US Army and served on Guadalcanal for a time. Unfortunately, it was something he never talked much about, except for a few tidbits that were few and far between. so thanks again, site bookmarked.
Takao, glad you loiked the site. I couldnt sweat that much and not share. I love doing the THEN AND NOW pics. matched up about 200 so far. I used to email Karl Soule, the 1st Marine Div photo officer..he was a great help with some locations. he told me they took 2.5 hours of 16mm colour film in 1942, but it was ALL LOST IN TRANSIT TO THE sTATES. aarrgghhh! I've been to both Gettysburg and the Little Big Horn, but I would trade both for one of your trips to Guadalcanal. It's always been my dream WWII destination. Also, great job with the web site.
yes, I love the THEN AND NOW photos. After a while you half expect to see Marines and Army walking around. sompl;aces are totally built over now, but at others you can still feel the ghosts. Coastwatcher Martin Clemens used to be a friend on mine and he had gots of great stories. Peter View attachment 19675 View attachment 19676 View attachment 19677
