I have been reading up on the late Tanky Challenor and his remarkable activities in Italy in 1943/4 (I think). There is a useful Wikopedia site and some obituaries in the UK press after his death in 2008.
I have noticed that heroes like himself and Paddy Mayne had great difficulty in attuning to "normal" life after WW2.
Tanky become more famous, or should I say notorious for his activities in the Metropolitan Police as a Detective Sergeant.
I would like to hear from anyone who has any knowledge, preferably first-hand about Tanky and Paddy, both in terms of their wartime exploits and their subsequent lives in peacetime.
Please note that I am not trying to dig up dirt about these men who to my mind were among the best of the best. I am interested in the transition from the extremes of wartime danger these men experienced to their re-integration into post-war Britain.
