    Don't be sorry. If you can get his discharge papers it may clear up any confusion. As Tommy said, it's quite a coincidence that two Carl R. Palmers served on LSTs.

    Any news is good news you guys have helped me out so much already! And that is okay one of my other important questions was what ship he was on when he was one of the only survivors on it that's another thing I've really wanted to know!

    Family stories about WWII veterans are usually not completely wrong or completely right. It's a bit like the old telephone game. The story tends to morph and/or grow the more it is repeated. For example, there is a possibility that he took part in Operation Dragoon, the invasion of Southern France, which took place 15 Aug 1944. Most people who don't know a lot about WWII have heard about the Normandy invasion, but know little to nothing about the other amphibious landing in France. It's not to difficult to imagine how the facts might be mis-remembered.
